H1 2018

Dollar banana setting the tone in EuropeThe first half of 2018 saw a boom in terms of volumes consumed in the EU-28: + 2.6 %, i.e. an extra 85 000 tonnes. Over twelve months (July 2017 to June 2018), consumption climbed to nearly 6.5 million tonnes, which represents an annual growth rate of 3.6 % for an additional volume of 223 000 tonnes. Looking back at the 1st half of 2018, we can observe that the increase was entirely due to the dollar origins (+ 5.7 % on the same period in 2017), while the ACPs (both Africa and the others) slumped by 5.9 %. European production followed the same downward trend, down by 5.6 %. Apart from Colombia which registered a decline, all the other dollar origins strengthened their positions, with growth rates of between 7 % (Costa Rica) and 17 % (Peru)! Ecuador, the number one supplier, actually exceeded 900 000 tonnes (+ 11 %). As for the ACPs, the Dominican Republic (- 5.6 %) but above all Cameroon (- 15.6 %) and Belize (- 10.7 %) went the other way. Côte d’Ivoire salvaged something with a very slight downturn (- 1.1 %). Only Ghana gained any points (+ 3 .1 %). For July 2018, European Customs clearances (Taxud base) tell us that the ACP supply did not get going at all, maintaining the very low level it reached in July 2017 and 2016. The dollar supply once again scaled the heights in July, higher even than in 2017, a real bumper year in its own right.

Between stagnation and shrinkage in the USA. The US market is completely out of step with the EU, with volumes there slightly down (- 1.3 %) over the first six months of 2018. Guatemala, Costa Rica and Honduras registered falls. Only Ecuador and Mexico managed to stay in the green. In general, the upward trend (+ 2.4 %) was nonetheless saved over twelve months, with a consumption of 4.208 million tonnes, i.e. 100 000 tonnes more than one year previously.
