Since the Madagascan sea-freight litchi harvest started early, the marketing period was extended accordingly. In addition, the calendar was fairly favourable with an additional week and three full weekends in December. Under these conditions, the good European demand was able to sell the cargos of the two conventional ships scheduled for the end of the year. This resulted in practically a shortage of merchandise at the beginning of the year, helping prices hold up. The first sea container litchis reached Europe in the first days of 2017, thereby ensuring a seamless overlap with conventional sea-freight litchis. They sold rapidly given their good taste quality and their satisfactory shelf life. Madagascan litchis proved more difficult to sell at the beginning of the year. The following incoming shipments also sold rapidly, at prices which dipped though were considerably higher than the previous year. South African litchis were received from mid-December. In January, they sold with more difficulty because of the Madagascan competition, their uneven quality and the predominance of small sizes. Only XXL fruits earned better value.

The air-freight campaign continued in January with shipments from Reunion distinctly down. Prices of on-the-stem or trussed fruits gradually recovered to reach 9.00-10.00 euros/kg. Conversely, stoned fruits sold at distinctly lower prices, between 4.00 and 6.00 euros/kg. The quality of Reunion litchis deteriorated steeply, making sales more difficult. Meanwhile, South Africa was regularly shipping on-the-stem batches, firstly of the Mauritius variety, and then Red McLean, which sold fairly steadily though interest in the litchi was dwindling considerably.
