Market balanced despite start of summer slowdown

Demand progressively dipped throughout the month because of the higher temperatures and the run-up to the summer holidays in certain countries. However, thanks to an overall supply shortfall, the balance held up. The supply from the dollar origins was once more below average, because of the seasonal Colombian fall, with levels below average (- 10 %), and moderate exports from Costa Rica. In addition, although in a structural growth phase at around 5 %, Ecuador restricted its shipments to the EC market to barely average levels, focusing its volumes in favour of Asia and the Middle East. As regards Africa, June was marked by a big seasonal fall from Côte d’Ivoire to below-average levels (- 4 %). On top of this there was a chronic Cameroonian shortfall because of political disruption. Hence the African supply was dragged down to 16 % below average. Finally, with the end of the French West Indies’ production peak in May, volumes began to fall there too, with below-average volumes (- 36 %). In this context supply and demand were in step, while prices remained stable and satisfactory overall for this time of year (7 % above average).
