The mango market had a fairly atypical January. The social movements in Peru which affected the beginning of the campaign in late November-early December delayed the fruit loads. With transport inertia adding to this delay, the result was the supply to the European markets were approximately one month behind schedule. Meanwhile, the Brazilian campaign finished early this year, promoting a supply shortfall. Under these exceptional supply conditions, the mango rates rapidly took an upturn, an unusual phenomenon at this time of year. It was only from mid-January that the supply returned to a more normal level. From then on, large tonnages out of Peru made for heavier sales conditions, with rates taking a considerable dip.

The air-freight market followed a different trend, with from the beginning of the month big shipments in a context of waning demand. The market saturation drove sale prices downward, with substantial price differences. Certain batches traded on a footing of 2.50 euros/kg for decent quality fruits. This situation lasted until the end of the month.
