A limited but unbalanced supply

In August, the Costa Rican supply, although limited, was greatly unbalanced by an excess of small sizes (9 and 10). The high availability of seasonal fruits completely took over demand, which because of the generalised start of the holiday season, was at its lowest ebb. This resulted in a fall in rates which was intensified in a context where supermarket sales (especially during the latter half-month) were well short of the forecasts (achieving barely 70 % of expected sales). This incipient poor sales phenomenon continued, affecting the pineapple rate, especially for small sizes.

On the air-freight market, demand and purchaser interest in the pineapple constantly waned, to the point of forcing some operators to suspend their Cayenne imports. Sales were very quiet, while the supply comprised solely a few batches. The market remained fluid, but demand lacked any real vitality. Ghana was the steadiest origin, offering a wide variety of fruits (Cayenne, green and coloured Sugarloaf, Sweet). At the very end of the month, despite the end of the school holidays, demand was still slow in switching back to the pineapple.

Sales and demand were very quiet on the Victoria market throughout July and August. The overall supply, although very small, especially from Reunion, struggled to sell, and operators often had to relax their prices to remain fluid and prevent stocks from forming.
