Market under-supplied

In July, the market was under-supplied overall, with prices high. Because of strikes in Costa Rica and numerous shipping delays, the supply to the European market was fairly irregular, especially at the beginning of the month, insofar as certain ships arrived practically empty. The low fruit availability and the launch of promotions in Germany contributed to rates strengthening on most of the spot markets. During the latter half of July, the high temperatures and start of the holiday season started to affect demand. This made sales more difficult, especially since the Costa Rican supply was increasingly imbalanced and was on a rapidly progressing trend. The price ranges were wider, with rates on the wane.

From the start of the summer, activity on the air-freight pineapple market was low. With the start of the holiday season, good availability of seasonal fruits and high temperatures, several operators very quickly decided to scale back their imports, to better adapt the supply to demand. The fall in Cayenne volumes was the most marked, especially since Benin is now absent from this segment. Sales remained fairly fluid for Sugarloaf batches, with coloured fruit earning better value than green fruit. We should also note on the air-freight Sweet segment the presence of a Ghanaian supply, in addition to the supply from Central America, which sold on a stable price footing (between 2.20 and 2.30 euros/kg).
