A limited supply for moderate summer demand

The sea-freight mango market was fairly stable for a large part of July. The more moderate summer demand was matched by a limited supply. The various origins supplying the market were shipping fairly modest quantities, favouring some degree of balance and some fluidity in merchandise flow. The West African campaign finished in July with the final batches (Kent and Keitt) from Mali. The Senegalese campaign, smaller than predicted, aggravated the relative under-supply to the market, and helped prices maintain stable levels of around 5.00-6.00 euros/box. At the end of the month, this origin was providing the bulk of its shipments. Volumes from a second flowering were set to be supplied during August. Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico provided the bulk of shipments, pending the start of the Israeli campaign. During the last two weeks of the month, the market situation proved complicated and paradoxical, with the overall supply weakening, helping rates strengthen. Yet this trend was strongly counteracted by numerous quality problems and poor keeping by a large part of the available supply, leading to some batches selling at lower prices.

The air-freight mango market was variable throughout July. Mexico and Senegal were the main market suppliers. The stop-start nature of the supply, especially from Mexico, but also the qualitative diversity of the incoming batches, caused considerable price variations. While satisfactory quality fruit sold at the rates stated below, many batches of advanced maturity or affected by fungal attacks sold at lower prices. Some were subject to commission or clearance sales. The Senegalese campaign finished early in the middle of the month. The second half of the month saw the start of the Israeli campaign, with the Aya variety. This fruit struggled to find a place in the face of competition from Kent. The supply was topped up by some Mabrouka variety batches from Egypt at the end of the month (3.50-4.00 euros/kg).
