Supply difficulties for Sweet

In February, the overall Sweet supply was disrupted and irregular. The rains in Costa Rica initially cut back the Costa Rican supply, and then the numerous shipping delays also impeded the market supply throughout the month. These difficulties had the effect of boosting demand and spot market prices, especially in the first half-month. The pineapple market was clearly split into two parts, with on the one hand scheduled sales to the supermarket sector, and on the other hand sales to the spot market, which involved only a small part of the overall supply. The start of the winter holidays, just about everywhere in Europe at the start of the second half-month, led to a slump in demand and in supermarket sales. Operators had to revise their spot market rates downward considerably, to prevent stocks from forming.

Throughout the month, the overall air-freight pineapple supply was rather small, which helped the market maintain some fluidity. Firstly the Cayenne supply was small, because of MRL concerns on certain batches from Cameroon. The start of the winter holidays from the second half-month then forced operators to scale back their supplies. So sales were decent, although Beninese fruit continued to struggle to recover its old customers. The situation was somewhat similar on the Sugarloaf market. The MRL concerns on certain Ghanaian batches and shelf life concerns over Beninese pineapples blurred the picture of the coloured fruit supply. Conversely, the green fruit supply sold very well, thanks in particular to steadier demand from the supermarket sector. On the Sweet market, rains in Costa Rica limited availability of fruit from the origin, and helped the Dominican Republic and Ghana in particular to come a little more to the fore.

The Victoria market enjoyed a positive trend throughout the month, because of the very low fruit availability from Reunion. The paucity of the overall supply also helped Mauritian pineapples sell well, despite their low coloration because of the rains.
