Florida and Texas grapefruit

Unsurprisingly, Florida's 2020-21 grapefruit harvest will be low, with 4.5 million boxes (174 000 tons). Since Hurricanes Matthew and Irma hit Florida in 2017, the production has failed to recover and is now down 15% from average. Moreover, the pervasiveness of greening only adds to the weakening of crops. If tropical grapefruit still occupies the high-end segment due to its high sugar content and low acidity, it now only represents a 7% share of the European winter citrus market.

Conversely, the Texan grapefruit harvest, which represents 37% of total production in the United States, is up slightly compared to the 2019-20 season with 4.9 million boxes (189 000 tonnes). A large part of the harvest is likely to benefit from the strong attractiveness of the US market, the consumption of which has been sharply increased by the COVID-19 crisis.
