According to Filipino customs, banana exports from the Philippines fell by 15% in 2020 compared to 2019. 2019 was indeed a particularly good year as the 4.4 million tonne mark was passed. In the end, with 3.7 million tons exported in 2020, the Philippine sector ended a very good year. Overtaken in 2019 by China, Japan will once again become the leading destination for Filipino fruits in 2020. South Korea retains the 3rd place, ahead of Iran and Saudi Arabia. In the end, these five export markets account for 90 % of the Filipino outlets. It should be noted that even if China has reduced its imports from the Philippines by a quarter in 2020, the middle empire buys more than 1.1 million tonnes of bananas a year from its Asian neighbour. Exports to the Middle East represent 16% of the annual total, amounting to around 600,000 tons.
