Global lime market

The lime market is showing resilience in the face of this unprecedented situation which has paralysed the catering sector, a vital one for this product. Hence lime imports into the USA increased by 10 % between 2019 and 2020, going from 643 000 tonnes to 708 000 tonnes. While Mexico remains by far the country’s number one supplier (691 000 tonnes in 2020), Colombia is continuing to progress, breaking the 12 000-tonnes mark for imports in 2020. For the EU-28, the surge has been less clear. Despite rising to 5 % above the four-year average, imports stagnated between 2019 and 2020 (161 000 t and 159 000 t respectively). However, while the supply profile is not changing, the gap between Brazil (104 000 t in 2020), the number one supplier country, and Mexico (33 000 t in 2020) is widening. Regarding consumption, the USA remains the world number one consumer, registering a slight rise (10 % more between 2019 and 2020), to reach an annual average consumption of 2.15 kg/capita. Conversely, European consumption has stabilised at around 0.30 kg/capita since 2017.
