Gradual turnaround

In June, the mango market saw a gradual turnaround from the sluggishness observed in May. Demand shrank as the supply of seasonal produce promoted by the supermarket sector progressed. The distinct improvement in market conditions was down to the considerable fall in the supply. From late May, shipments from the West African origins quickly dwindled. This merchandise also exhibited increasingly fragile quality, requiring systematic sorting, and thereby handicapping the economic results. So Brazil was the main supplier, topped up by the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. These suppliers primarily offered Keitt, Palmer or Tommy Atkins, less popular among European consumers. The shortage of produce in relation to the natural market demand intensified through the month of June, especially because of the particularly late start to the Senegalese campaign, which usually provides the transition from the West African campaign to the Israeli campaign. So rates strengthened initially, before seeing a more marked increase in the second half of the month.

The air-freight mango market saw a similar movement, with a marked fall in shipments. In the first half of the month, the final batches from Mali sold at stronger prices than in May, despite the haphazard fruit quality. Meanwhile, Mexico started its campaign with very limited quantities. The drought which hit the Mexican production zones during the fruit growth phase seems to be the main cause of this shortfall. The Michoacán and Nayarit zones exported small quantities, which actually caused temporary supply interruptions. The campaign in the Sinaloa region, the biggest one, only kicked off at the end of the period. Logistical difficulties also contributed to the irregularity of the supply.
