Market marked by major logistical disruptions

In March the mango market was marked by heavy logistical disruption. The reduced availability of containers at the origins, the chronic shipping delays into Europe and the difficulties unloading at North European ports hindered sales fluidity. In spite of these constraints, market conditions in the first half of the month improved, given the scaling back of Peruvian exports. The change in harvesting region, from Piura to Casma, doubtless deepened the fall in shipments. Mango rates gradually strengthened, for both Peruvian and Brazilian fruit, shipments of which were on the increase. In the second half of March, the market was swollen up with a new surge of shipments from Peru, and a parallel increase in shipments from Brazil. Rates slumped slightly, but remained high.

The air-freight mango market was more mixed, despite a fall in Peruvian shipments. The high sales price, as a consequence of soaring cost prices, probably hindered air-freight mango consumption. Rates remained stable but concealed variations, with sales sometimes made from €4.50/kg for batch ends. At the end of the month, the market was recovering because of strikes by Peruvian transporters which limited or even suspended air-freight shipments. Some additional batches of local varieties from the Dominican Republic were aimed at the traditional exotic trade.
