A general decline in all production areas

According to the data presented at the Medfel trade fair in Perpignan, the trend this year is towards a decrease in the area dedicated to melon in all production areas. A slight drop has been recorded in Morocco, while in Spain the drop is much more marked with a total of 4,000 ha, down 800 ha in particular in Murcia and Alicante. In France, the decline is significant with a decrease in surface area of 10%, the Centre-West being the most affected basin with a loss of 800 ha linked to the cessation of production by a historic operator: Soldive. In Morocco, the beginning of the season was sluggish and volumes were not linear during the campaign. In Spain, the unfavourable weather at the end of March/beginning of April did not allow for good planting and the start of production will be later, with the Seville basin starting this week. In France, the trend is for operators to refocus on the Charentais. The presence of Spanish and French melons is still to be determined depending on the weather and the fruit set on French soil. Already some volumes of French lowland melon are arriving on the shelves from the Bouches du Rhône and the southern Vaucluse. The unprecedented increase in the cost of inputs, the difficulty of supplying raw materials (production and packing stations), the logistical and labour problems, as well as the gloomy consumption context for fruit and vegetables are causing fears and uncertainty for all operators.
