Sweet potato
The market was primarily supplied by Egypt, with white-fleshed sweet potato. These products sold regularly at between €0.95 and €1.05/kg. The supply was topped up by Brazilian tubers, until the second half of October. Honduras took over, with its produce selling at stronger prices, of around €1.50/kg, which in December rose to reach €1.80/kg for the end-of-year festivities. After Christmas, prices returned to their initial level of €1.40/kg.
Egypt and Spain supplied the market with orange-fleshed sweet potato. This supply was enriched from mid-October with produce from Honduras and Portugal, which sold on a footing of €1.30-€1.40/kg. Meanwhile, the supply was strengthened by batches from the USA, with Covington variety tubers, which sold at between €0.90 and €1.10/kg.
Yam
The market was fairly stable for Ghanaian white yam, which sold at an average of €1.20/kg from mid-October to late December. This rate rose to nearly €1.50/kg in the first half of October and in December, due to better demand and a more measured supply. Brazilian Cuscus yams sold on the same price footing throughout Q4 2021. Mid-November brought the start of the domestic yam trading campaign, with a stabilised price of €3.80/kg.
Eddoe
After a few disruptions at the start of the period, due to supply irregularities, the Costa Rican eddoe rate was fixed at around an average of €2.30/kg until late December.
Cassava
After a relative trough in late October/early November, the Costa Rican cassava price took a gradual upturn, reaching its highest level during the end-of-year festivities. In late December it regained the level registered at the start of the period.
Ginger
The ginger market was dominated by Brazilian produce from October to December. Their prices held up at between €2.00 and €2.30/kg, depending on the shipment quality and the packaging provided (13 kg or 5 kg). China topped up the supply, overhauling Brazil in terms of price in the middle of the quarter. Chinese produce traded at higher prices, especially in December, because of more specific demand, but also rising cost prices.
Dasheen
The dasheen market was balanced over the last quarter of the year. Saint Vincent supplied moderate quantities, enabling sale prices to hold firm at between €3.50 and €3.70/kg. The limited air imports from Martinique traded at a constant price of €4.20/kg.
