With over 625,000 tonnes of apparent consumption, Spain has set a new consumption record in 2021 and is returning to growth after the hiatus of 2020. However, the Canary Islands' Platano, which is 3% lower than in 2020, has maintained levels higher than in the two pre-pandemic years, 2018 and 2019, despite losses due to the volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma between September and December 2021. While net imports from other origins are up 11% in 2020, they remain below the record levels of 2018 and 2019. Within the bloc of import origins, it is clear that the dollar bloc is driving this growth (+15%). The African ACP, which had declined significantly in 2020, returned to levels similar to 2019 (before the pandemic). Only ACP from the Caribbean and reimports from the other EU Member States continued to decline. Spanish exports, exceeding 110,000 tonnes for the first time, also made significant progress (+22% / 2020), with some operators consolidating their position as exporters.
