Turkish grapefruit: big production downturn expected in 2022-23.

According to initial estimates, the Turkish grapefruit harvest this season should be historically low. The hard frosts in March seem to have halved volumes compared to the 2021-22 season (238 000 t). Furthermore, due to spells of intense drought during the summer, fruit development was limited and maturity slightly delayed. Consequently, provided that the rains arrive subsequently, the average size should be small. This is an additional challenge for the Turkish industry, already affected by the shrinkage of its two main export markets over the course of the last campaign. The outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict in February 2022 caused a collapse in shipments to Ukraine. In 2020-21, the Russian market represented approximately 50 000 tonnes, i.e. nearly 31 % of total grapefruit exports, as opposed to 21 % in 2021-22 (34 000 t). Similarly, the stiffening of sanitary inspections at EU borders has led to exports dropping to around 10 % below the four-year average.
