Banana Monitoring

A first estimate of the supply of the ex-EU28 market (EU27+UK) shows an apparent consumption down by nearly 5% compared to 2021 to 6,316,000 tons. This takes us back some four years to 2017 before the great leap forward. The balance sheet still needs to be refined with official European production data, but at the time of writing, all origins have reduced their presence on the market. Dollar suppliers have reduced their supplies by 4% (242,000 tons). The ACP are down by 2% with Africa resisting (+ 0.6%) and the other ACP reducing their presence (- 5.1%). European production is the most affected since it is down by 11.1% due in particular to the extreme weakness of the Spanish offer. Details by origin are given in the table below. Dollar bananas have a market share of 74.9%, ACP bananas of 16.7% and EU bananas of 8.4%.
