Mango monthly review: April 2023

April was generally a smooth-running month for the mango trade. Following on from the second half of March, demand boosted sales ahead of the Easter holidays in early April. Sales slipped back slightly in the second half of the month, with rates slumping for all sea-freight mangos placed on the market. Prices then stabilised until the end of the period due to ebbing Peruvian shipments. The Peruvian campaign was rapidly winding down, and this was not fully offset by a steady though moderate Brazilian supply. The first Ivorian shipments were received in limited quantities in the second half of April. Hence the overall supply was balanced with demand, helping rates maintain steady and fairly high levels. Peru’s downturn aided Brazilian produce and the start of the West African campaign, especially for Côte d'Ivoire.

The air-freight mango market remained fluid at the start of the month for the Easter holidays, and then greatly deteriorated in the second half of the month. This worsening in the market conditions was caused by the very large shipments arriving after Easter. This influx of merchandise came just as demand was waning. It led to the formation of stocks, which sold slowly thereafter. The qualitative deterioration of the fruit accelerated the price decline. Some sales were made at lower price levels than those set out below. At the end of the month, prices recovered slightly due to the fall in the Peruvian supply, and the lack of competition in this trading window. The first batches from Côte d'Ivoire, received from week 16, were not placed by the operators straight away, firstly given the unfavourable market conditions, and secondly the borderline maturity of the first Ivorian shipments. In this context Malian Valencia mangos struggled to find takers, and saw their prices gradually decline.
