A fairly fluid mango market

July was characterised by a fairly fluid mango market throughout the month. In spite of the summer holiday period, demand saw a shrinkage, though not very steep or to a large degree. The moderate supply was in line with procurement needs, which explained the fairly high and steady prices, particularly for Kent. The bulk of the Kent supply came from Senegal, with moderate volumes. Meanwhile, Brazil supplied mainly Palmer, less popular and slightly lower valued than competing origins. The Dominican Republic for its part provided Keitt, with prices holding up, taking advantage of the relative under-supply from Senegal. This was especially marked since the Senegalese authorities suspended exports at the end of the month because of risks of mango contamination by fruit flies, thereby bringing the origin’s campaign to an end. Some Mexican batches made up for the relative supply shortfall. They traded on the same price footing as Senegalese batches.

The air-freight mango market saw a more complex trajectory, with the supply often exceeding the demand level. Volumes came primarily from Mexico, with Kent from the Sinaloa region, quickly followed by Baja California. This fruit often sold at cost price, or even lower. Meanwhile the scarcer Senegalese mangos saw their prices dip in the middle of the month, as the Israeli campaign opened with the Kasturi variety. Aya and Maya mangos, generally earlier, were not set to be available until late July-early August.
