The ethnic products market had an uneventful Q1 2023. Supply levels were for the most part regular and balanced in relation to demand. Only chilli peppers and ginger saw price variations, caused by modifications in procurement sources or variations in volumes placed. To a lesser degree, chayotes and christophines also saw price fluctuations due to the change in origin.

Chilli pepper

The chilli peppers market progressed in two distinct phases in Q1 2023. The first, extending from early January to mid-February, was characterised by moderate supplies provided by Spain and Honduras, topped up by small quantities from Martinique. The paucity of shipments had the consequence of a marked increase in sale prices, to in excess of €10.00/kg. With the supply then growing, prices ebbed to between €8.00 and €10.00/kg, or less for Spanish produce. Until mid-February, Spanish shipments weighed on transactions. Competing origins managed to keep higher prices, though they represented only a small part of incoming shipments. The market conditions seemed to improve at the end of the period, with the pressure from Spanish produce easing.

Plantain banana

In the face of a gradually bigger supply, rates for Colombian plantain bananas maintained a downward trend until mid-February. They stabilised thereafter until the end of the period, regaining the level registered in October 2022, before the price surge caused by a slowdown in shipments from Colombia. Ecuadorian plantain bananas sold simultaneously at lower prices, but parallel with those of competing fruit. Top-up air-freight batches from Martinique sold at higher prices, given the freight costs.

Chayote and christophine

The chayote and christophine market was fed primarily by Costa Rican produce. The rather restrained availability aided the balance between supply and demand, thereby helping keep prices strong and stable. Like the previous year, shipments of French production continued until late March. However the quantities placed were unrepresentative. Prices remained high, more particularly for the rarer christophines. Rates for this merchandise were sometimes overestimated, given the gradual deterioration in its quality.
