Chilli pepper

French-produced chilli peppers dominated the market in Q4 2022, with prices rising throughout the period. Because of the weather conditions in the summer, this year’s production was fairly early. Initially abundant and good quality, it was curbed and weakened by the high temperatures to which it was subjected. The limited availability helped sale prices hold up, and encouraged other origins to extend their shipments. Hence Spain and Morocco offset the downturn in French volumes, more or less following the same price trajectories. Pepper rates also saw a temporary increase with the end-of-year festivities, due to brisker demand with the market in shortfall. The supply was topped up on an irregular basis by fruit from Martinique, in small quantities. Its variable quality weighed down on sale prices.

Plantain banana

After a slight fall in October, prices of Colombian plantain bananas took another upturn in November until mid-December. They actually reached a peak in early December in excess of €3.00/kg, an exceptional level for this product. Rates dipped thereafter back to their initial level. Price variations seemingly mirrored the Colombian shipments, which proved to be irregular and sometimes went against demand. The supply was topped up at the end of the year by some air-freight batches from Martinique.

Chayote and christophine

The chayote and christophine market was supplied simultaneously by Costa Rica and French production. Rates remained steady, except at the start and end of the quarter, when prices reached their maximum. French produce was valued at a slightly higher level than Costa Rican produce. French chayote prices dipped at the end of the year, in line with production winding down and yielding lower-quality fruit. Conversely, the final christophine batches earned better value, given the small quantities still available. Rates for Costa Rican produce took an upturn at the end of the year, due to the disappearance of the French supply. Costa Rica became practically the sole supplier to the European market.
