Peruvian avocado

Peru’s Hass avocado export potential will register a big increase of approximately 13 % in 2023, according to an initial estimate by Prohass. Volumes placed on the international market could be as much as 625 000 tonnes, with Peru asserting through this record potential its place as the world number two exporter. Though a major increase, this comes as no surprise in view of the massive surface areas planted in recent times: nearly 30 000 ha in 5 years, i.e. practically doubling the cultivation area! The market planning envisages a more limited increase in exports to the EU27+UK, while banking on a distinct rise for the USA. This seems far from a sure-fire bet given the magnitude of volumes from Michoacán still to be sold, and unlike last season Jalisco potentially exporting to the USA from the beginning of its season (actual start only in late June/early July in 2022 for the first campaign). Furthermore, it has seen peculiar climate conditions, which could mean a significantly early campaign, with shipments into Europe probably surging during the second half of April.
