Over the summer period, ethnic products sold at for the most part constant prices, or with little variation. Consumption remained stable but quiet. The balance between supply and demand doubtless contributed to this stability. Only yam sales saw more marked price variations, because of the supply alteration.

Sweet potato

The white-fleshed sweet potato market supply came mainly from Honduras and Brazil during Q3 2023. Rates slumped slightly in August due to lower demand during the main holiday period. They recovered slightly in the second half of September because of Honduran shipments flagging. Brazilian tubers sold more steadily, and at a higher price level, albeit in smaller quantities.

The orange-fleshed sweet potato market held up until mid-August, with limited volumes from Egypt. Prices saw a more distinct fall in the latter part of the period, with numerous incoming batches of small tubers less suited to demand. So the price ranges widened significantly, with sales from €0.50/kg. Honduras, Spain and Portugal also supplied some batches, which sold on the same price footing for limited volumes.

Yam

Cuscus yams from Brazil, and to a lesser degree Colombia, sold at constant prices throughout the summer. Colombian shipments dried up in September, while Brazilian shipments continued and indeed stepped up. Brazilian produce, historically more strongly rooted on the market, obtained higher sale prices of approximately €0.50/kg. Rates for Ghanaian white yams saw a more variable trajectory, characterised by an increase from mid-July because of the arrival of the new harvest. In the second half of August, they dipped following the arrival of batches of fragile quality. Prices recovered thereafter in the first half of September, before dipping again at the end of the month, under the effect of a bigger supply.

Eddoe

Costa Rican eddoe prices were constant throughout Q3 2023, given the limited supply in line with the demand level. According to the quality and sizing of the produce, prices fluctuated at various times between €2.80 and €4.00/kg.

Dasheen

The market was supplied primarily by Martinique, with some small air-freight volumes selling at constant prices. Dasheens from Saint Vincent should reappear in early October.

Cassava

There was a slight price rise for Costa Rican cassavas from late July to early September, because of more restrained volumes in view of the stable but moderate demand.

Ginger

Brazilian ginger prices saw a downward trend, though the halt in air-freight shipments in July inflated them. Subsequent shipments were primarily by sea-freight, explaining the downturn in sale prices. In the latter part of the period, prices stabilised across all origins, though with a slight increase for the less abundant Chinese ginger.
