Mango monthly review: December 2023

At the beginning of December, the sea-freight mango market continued on the same footing as in late November. In the context of an abundant market supply, and congestion from stocks built up over preceding weeks, the downward trend was confirmed, to differing degrees according to the variety and market. During this period, we could observe price variations by fruit size, but also fruit quality. Fruit out of more or less extended storage, given its quicker quality deterioration, occasionally sold at prices below those stated below. In the second half of the month, the market conditions altered again, due to the pick-up in demand for the festive period, and also the marked fall in shipments from Brazil and the hesitant start to the Peruvian campaign. Rates underwent a gradual slowdown, especially given distributors’ reticence to raise prices, and the ongoing high cost prices for importers. This situation at the start of the year should remain complex, given the subsiding Brazilian shipments, particularly for the Kent variety, and the low export forecasts for Peru.

The air-freight market was on a downward trend at the start of the month (with sales from €4.50/kg for Brazilian mangos), given the increased availability and a limited demand, but strengthened thereafter. Demand picked up more significantly in the run-up to the Christmas holidays, with prices recovering more or less strongly. Some Peruvian mangos sold as high as €8.50/kg. The fruit shortfall caused by Brazil’s rapid withdrawal, especially for the Kent variety, encouraged importers to seek alternatives such as the Brazilian Haden variety, or mangos from Asian origins. With lower sale prices, these satisfied some purchasers. The dip in demand at the end of the year was offset by the paucity of incoming shipments, helping keep prices fairly stable.
