A rather stable market

The pineapple market had a rather stable February. During the first half, despite the Berlin Fruit Logistica show drawing in quite a few operators and the ongoing farmers’ protests in Europe, the market did not have any real difficulty absorbing the volumes placed. It is true that there was not a big Sweet supply from Costa Rica, and that there was ongoing disruption due to shipping delays. The second half was marked by the start of the winter holidays and the closure of school canteens. Hence demand was not as high. However, the supply was once again heavily disrupted by weather problems which affected all shipping, and greatly limited the pineapple supply. At the very end of the month, spot rates were very high since the European market had a big supply shortfall.

In February, activity on the air-freight market was quickly affected by the start of the winter holidays, driving operators to considerably scale back their imports from the end of the first half-month, to better match demand. So the market remained relatively fluid, since availability was limited. Shipments of lower quality or mixed coloration found it much more difficult to sell, and this was manifested in the price ranges. The Cayenne market was very quiet. On the Sugarloaf market, usually very fluid, operators found it harder to sell off mixed-coloration batches. The Sweet market remained stable, with sales only involving limited volumes.

Throughout the month, the overall Victoria supply was limited, apparently because of cyclones in the Indian Ocean. Sales remained fairly fluid with strong rates, as the batches placed were well below the demand level. Fruit from Reunion and South Africa was scarcer, especially at the end of the month.
