Californian producers will have a completely different view to their Peruvian counterparts. With barely more than 100 000 t, the expected harvest is the second smallest for twenty years or so. This is down to the alternate bearing phenomenon, and in addition a major heatwave in spring 2016. The campaign should wind down early, from late July. It is most fortunate that the floods which hit the State in January do not seem to have caused additional direct losses. On the contrary, they brought an end to a long drought, with all parts of the State now free from exceptional drought (as opposed to 45 % of surface areas before the rains).
