The Orri Running Committee, responsible in particular for protecting the Orri variety internationally, recently launched an app for verifying the legality of plantations of this variety, via the GPS function on a smartphone. In two months, the 700 look-ups made were able to detect 6 % illegal orchards. This is a highly dissuasive system due to its simplicity of use, which could well seriously curb illegal planting of this Spanish variety, prized above others for its profitability (between 0.80 and 1.20 euro/kg in 2015-16 according to the ORC). 32 000 illegal trees were uprooted in 2016, taking the total uprooting to more than 60 000 trees.
