Variable losses in bananas in the Caribbean

If the passage of hurricane Irma, a category 5 climatic monster that has ravaged the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barth, will have caused only very limited damage in the French West Indies, it is not the same for the Dominican Republic. Approximately 10% of banana losses were reported for the 6 upcoming weeks.

Given the dynamism of the production (new plantations and extensions planted following the floods of November 2016), the decline in volumes caused by Irma could only offset the growth of production. If the continuation of the rains and hurricane Maria threating the area now, do not cause additional damage, the peak of production expected this fall 2017, could remain similar to past years.
