Absolute banana consumption record in the EU in 2016

European and US customs data as well as CIRAD's data on European production give an estimate market supply for the whole of 2016.

EU-28

Absolute consumption record at 6 081 000 tonnes (excluding European productions marketed in the production areas). This is a 4.5% growth compared to 2015 (ie + 260 000 tonnes).
Dollar bananas are +3.6% up (compared to 2015); ACP Africa + 13.6%; The other ACP + 2.3% and finally European production + 4.1% (only volume shipped to continental Europe).

The market shares are as follow (provisional):

-          Dollar                  70.1%

-          ACP                    19.2%

-          EU Production       10.7%

 

USA

The situation is quite different on the US market where the market is 1% smaller than 2015, (41 000 tonnes less imported). In 2016 consumption reached 4 038 000 tonnes. Colombia continues to reduce its shipments to the United States (6% market share), while Guatemala (37%) consolidates its volumes like Ecuador (19%) or Honduras (13%). Costa Rica made a strong comeback to 18% market share, up 4% compared to 2015.
