Small fall in the French table grape harvest

According to the latest data from Agreste, French table grape production is set for approximately 45 400 tonnes, over a production surface area of 5 309 ha. This year, professionals are reckoning on a harvest of around 40 000 tonnes, i.e. slightly smaller than in 2019.

For the two main production regions, the South-West and South-East, both the quality and volumes for the campaign are in place. In Tarn-et-Garonne, AOC Chasselas de Moissac began the harvest on 20 August, by agreement with the primary traders, thanks to a branch agreement signed in early August, setting the necessary sugar content at 16°Brix. The harvest will be around 6 500 tonnes, of which 2 000 tonnes under organic certification across all categories. The AOP harvest will reach approximately 4 000 tonnes, of which 2 500 tonnes in category I. AOP brings together 222 farms, 53 of which hold HVE certification (high environmental value). In a few months’ time, the AOP’s specifications is to be reviewed so that certain vines can produce a higher yield (from 13 t/ha at present to 15-16 t/ha).

In the South-East, growers are announcing an exceptional harvest, despite it being ahead of schedule and the high summer temperatures. The volumes should reach 2 000 to 2 500 tonnes under AOC Muscat du Ventoux, i.e. a forecast around average for recent years. The harvest officially started on 10 August, and trading on 20 August. Growers believe that production sale prices are not high enough, and even 15 to 30 % below average.
