Supply pressure… or resurgent demand due to Covid?

How to interpret the considerable bounce-back in easy peelers consumption seen in 2020? Average volumes consumed per capita in EU27+UK non-producer countries reached 4.6 kg, a level 100 g to 300 g higher than in previous years. Was this leap due to additional demand due to increased consumer interest in foods rich in vitamin C, or more prosaically to the big volumes offered at sometimes highly attractive prices? It is hard to pinpoint. What is clear is that Q1brought a big supply (bumper harvest of Mediterranean late hybrids), as well as during the summer season (boom in imports from the Southern Hemisphere, especially to the UK market) and Q4 (massive Spanish clementine harvest, sold at highly aggressive prices). The performance level was very good in France (4.8 kg/capita, i.e. + 180 g), the UK (4.5 kg, i.e. + 280 g), and even exceptional in Germany (4.5 kg, i.e. + 500 g). Only the Scandinavian markets saw a slight downturn (4.8 kg, i.e. - 100 g). There was a major boom on the other big world markets: a record 6.3 kg/capita in Russia, more than ever the world’s top consumer country (+ 140 g), and another record in Canada with 4.4 kg (+ 190 g), and finally a record in the USA, although the level remains very modest compared to the other most economically developed countries (3.2 kg/capita).
