First forecast of the 2022-23 season

With 6 million tonnes expected this season, the first estimates published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture point to an overall drop in production for all citrus families, both compared with last season (-13%) and with the four-year average. Indeed, the climate has proved particularly difficult for production, with frosts during flowering followed by heavy rainfall in the spring and intense heat episodes during the summer. In detail, the orange harvest appears to be the most affected and is down by 17% compared with the four-year average, with only 3 million tonnes (-20%/ 2021/22). The situation is similar for small citrus fruits, with production down by 10% compared to the average and to last season. In view of the summer drought, the first production returns indicate a deficit concentrated in the second part of the season (late orange varieties and late hybrids). The fall is also marked in pomelo with a drop of 8% compared to the four-year average (75,000 tonnes, or -14% compared to 2020/21). Finally, despite the structural growth of the Spanish orchard, lemon production (1.15 million tonnes, +2%/ 2021-22) remains at the average harvest level of 2021-22, but remains far from the record levels of the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons.
