In December, the improvement in the market conditions from the previous month continued, and indeed strengthened. So the pineapple market trend was fairly good, albeit because of the overall supply, still heavily disrupted by shipping delays, being less than demand. In the first half-month, sales were fluid, boosted by promotions. However the shipping delays very quickly drove operators to seek to secure volumes in anticipation of the holiday period, especially since the poor weather (rain and cold) was contributing to cutting back the Costa Rican supply. The delays continued, leading to large volumes being deferred to the last week of the year, i.e. after Christmas, hence sales fell through in several cases. Over the month as a whole spot sale rates remained fairly stable, but at the end of the month, operators were afraid of really struggling to sell off the fruit received after the festive period.

Overall, the air-freight market was very lively, with demand constantly rising until Christmas. Demand was particularly high for the coloured Sugarloaf supply, with increased competition between Ghanaian pineapples and the less expensive fruit from Benin and Togo. Sweet sales also remained highly fluid. Unfortunately, because of the big price adjustment due to the increased air-freight costs, volumes placed were more limited. The fall in interest in Cayenne continued, though with a peculiarity: only a few brands remained popular, with purchasers completely losing interest in the others. After Christmas, sales were quieter, although rates remained high.

The Victoria market was very lively, with demand reaching its peak in the holiday period, once again conforming the highly festive nature of the fruit. So rates were high throughout the month. Since the overall supply was lower than demand, some unusual sizes were placed on the market (e.g. 5). These struggled to find takers, which drove operators to widen their price range in order to remain fluid.
