Southern Hemisphere Citrus

According to initial estimates by the WCO, the 2023 export potential for Southern Hemisphere citruses should be 6 % above the four-year average, reaching 3.7 million tonnes. Unsurprisingly, this growth dynamic reflects that of the market leader, South Africa, which represents 70 % of total volumes. Hence there should be a very marked increase in export potential for easy peelers (1 million tonnes, i.e., 13 % above average), because of the big planting trend and young orchards entering their prime, mainly for late hybrids, in South Africa and Peru. Similarly, there is a large increase for the lemon (900 000 t, i.e., + 14 %), given the big expansion in South African surface areas. Furthermore, Argentina is managing to maintain a stable export potential, despite a fall in production. The export potential for the orange should remain stable (1.6 million tonnes, i.e., + 1 %), with the grapefruit seeing a fall (253 000 t, i.e. - 13 %), because of South Africa deliberately scaling back exports to limit negative production returns, after a very difficult 2022 season.
