The supply of the French market in December 2020 was very sustained and contrasted with the previous month. With 61,200 tons consumed in December, it remains nevertheless within the average for the last three years. It's still the dollar banana (+35 % compared to December 2019) and the inflows via other UE Country (+56 %) that have achieved the best performances. French production also shows a good progression (+ 5%). The ACP remains very exactly on the volumes shipped in December 2019.

The data for December gives us the opportunity to make a first annual assessment for 2020. It won't surprise anyone to note that the French market is still progressing in volume to beat, this year again, an absolute record at 699,000 tons, i.e. an increase of 5%! Gross supply (excluding re-exports) amounted to 882,000 tons without breaking any records. Re-exported volumes were down 10% to 183,000 tons. Based on hypotheses on the origin of re-exported bananas, we obtain a market share for FWI bananas of 24% (-3 points) against 76% for the ACPs or Dollar origins. It is the Dollar banana that has progressed the most in France with a growth rate of at least 30% (i.e. without counting the share of Dollar bananas in imports via another Member State). ACP volumes will melt by 8% in 2020.

A very detailed assessment will be published in the forthcoming issue of FruiTrop.
