An unprecedented disaster… those are the words of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Putnam, after Cyclone Irma hit Florida. The consequences on the citrus growing industry are still difficult to calculate, since the situation has still not stabilised (new wave of fruit droppages expected, after direct droppages due to the wind). Nonetheless it is clear that there will be colossal losses for the orange (a figure of 70 % has been proposed by numerous sources). The grapefruit, produced mainly in the eastern part of the State, opposite the cyclone’s entry point on the peninsula, is less affected (35 % losses according to certain highly provisional estimates). This catastrophe could knock out certain producers, already weakened by a very bleak phytosanitary context (canker critical, and above all greening).
