A record stock of Gala

Open/Close Shop

The European apple market remains swollen, particularly for Gala, Golden, Braeburn and Jonagored, especially since the long-distance outlets are much more restricted, with the start of the Southern Hemisphere campaigns. The stock as at 1st March 2019 was still 8 % above the 3-year average (3 million tonnes), with 200 000 t of Gala (+ 80 %) and 100 000 t of Pink Lady (+ 6 %), but also plenty of bicolored or red varieties still available, especially in Northern and Eastern Europe (+ 20 % approximately). There was not an overly big harvest for either Golden, with stocks 11 % below average in spite of mediocre sales, or for Jonagold/Jonagored (- 10 %), although the campaign will doubtless take time to get started for the latter. Hence Poland, as at 1st March 2019, still had apple stocks of 940 000 t (21 % above the 3-year average), though Germany (252 000 t, i.e. + 7 %), the United Kingdom (64 300 t, i.e. + 23 %) and also France (405 000 t, i.e. + 12 %) were still heavily laden. Stocks were around average in Italy (913 000 t, i.e. - 2 %), and for the moment below average in Benelux (200 000 t, i.e. - 16 %).
