Madagascan litchi

The earliness of the Madagascar litchi season is again confirmed. The fruiting of the trees continues favourably and confirms the potential for the opening of the campaign at the end of week 45 - the beginning of week 46. Rainfall in October was regular and similar to that of 2019. On the other hand, the rise in temperature necessary for the ripening of the fruit is more random (sources CTHT).

In terms of volume, the Reunion Island campaign should be equivalent to last year's but maybe slightly later. In 2020, Reunion started exporting litchis from the Indian Ocean zone in week 45, but with unrepresentative quantities. The most likely start for this origin is traditionally in mid-November.

Depending on the latest weather developments, the official opening date of the Malagasy season should be set for 17 November. This date is identical to that of the 2019/20 season. If this were the case, the first conventional vessel could leave Tamatave on 20 November and arrive in Europe on 2 or 3 December.
