European banana market

From the end of summer 2022, the shortage of fruit made itself felt on the European banana market. Due to poor climate conditions (cold, rains, lack of sunshine), as well as a lack of fertilisation directly linked to increasing input costs, the dollar origins supply was well below average. In addition, the devaluation of the euro against the dollar made the European market less attractive for these origins. Consequently, prices embarked on a dizzying ascent, peaking at levels above €15.00/box from September onwards. November brought a record average price of €15.49/box, an unprecedented performance for the autumn! Of course, these record prices were not synonymous with record margins, with the current inflationary crisis (energy, transport) affecting all the links in the supply chain.
