European banana market
Since the beginning of the year, the word has been on everyone's lips, especially with the rise in energy prices, but inflation is also hitting the fruit and vegetable sector hard. According to data published by the RMN, in France, the price increase at the retail level is significant for the two most consumed fruits: apples and bananas. Since the beginning of 2022, the Golden apple has recorded a price increase of 6% compared to the average of the last two years. For bananas, the flagship fruit, the price increase at the retail stage is around 5% with a peak in April when it reached 9% above the averages of the last two years, which is unheard of! The trend is of course not confined to the French market. In Germany, among classic retailers, the increase would be around 4% compared to 9% among the big discounters with a peak in April (+13%/average 2 years). This increase at the retail level is linked to a general increase in costs, particularly linked to the energy crisis in Europe (increase in transport costs, ripening) and also to the revaluation of the price of import contracts which took place at the beginning of 2022. Indeed, the import price has increased by 13% compared to the average.
