A scaled-back campaign for the Peruvian mango in 2023-24

The abundant rainfall last spring in Peru led not only to the mango trading campaign winding down prematurely, but also to damage in the orchards. Furthermore, other meteorological issues followed this rainy spell, thereby contributing to the 2023-24 campaign being smaller. In addition to the alternate bearing phenomenon, the insufficient temperature drop interfered with the mango trees’ rest phase, thereby restricting blooming. This weakened bloom naturally reduced fruit-setting, and therefore fruit production. Piura, the country’s biggest and earliest region, seems to have been hit hardest by these various natural factors. Consequently, the 2023-24 Peruvian campaign should be more modest, and may be a bit later. This shift should aid Brazil, the only origin capable of a large-scale supply to the European market. In any event, mango rates should remain high for the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.
