With pineapple imports into the EU27+UK of 444 000 tonnes between January and June, the level in the first half of 2023 was the same as the previous year. We should note that 2022 set a low point in the slide which began after the 2018 peak. Could this mean the end of the tumble before a bounce-back into an upward cycle? Or the start of stagnation at one of the lowest levels for the past six years? Although it seems barely perceptible, the UK’s import volumes have dropped gradually: between 2020 and 2023, net imports shrank by 5 % over H1. In the European Union, volumes for H1 were stable overall in relation to last year, though there were two particularly lean periods. April and June saw small supplies from Costa Rica, probably because of the delayed production (low Brix), caused by the drought which hit the fruit from the natural bloom, as well as by logistical disruptions (shipping delays). A major sizing imbalance was also observed, which seemingly limited shipments, especially at the beginning of summer.
