The first half of 2023 appears to have been marked by high stability on the US organic banana market. With imports of 278 700 tonnes between January and June, the supply was up 1% on H1 2022, keeping level with the two-year average level for 2021-2022. Does this point to a market which has reached maturity? Perhaps so, because since the peak reached in 2021, organic volumes to the USA have levelled out. While the global market no longer seems to be growing, we need to take a look at the inner workings of the system to observe that the suppliers’ dynamic is continuing to develop. Ecuador gained ground again, continuing its dizzying ascent: the origin rose to 19% above the two-year average in H1; all the other market suppliers were down: -9% for Mexico, -3% for Colombia and finally Peru, formerly the no. 2 market supplier, continued to plummet like a stone (-48%).
