With volumes to all destinations approximately 4 % below the 2021-22 average, 2023 was the lowest year since 2019 in terms of total banana exports. According to the initial estimates from professional sources, this was the result of particularly abnormal weather in late 2022 (record rainfall in the Uraba zone) and the inputs crisis originating in 2021, which caused fertilisation faults. Although the shortfall was present over nearly the whole year, it did ease at certain periods, in particular during the spring and autumn production peaks.
2023 started with a Colombian export shortfall, albeit the level was close to average for the season, due to the persistent rains affecting the Uraba zone in late 2022. Volumes swelled with the start of the seasonal increase in March, though the shortfall persisted until the peak which arrived in May (8 % below the two-year average). With the seasonal fall that began in June, the shortfall widened again (- 14 %) and remained in place throughout the year. It was only from October, with the second peak of the year, that volumes returned to normal, actually reaching above-average levels (+ 13 %). However, in October and November, the Santa Marta zone was hit by winds and flooding, which affected banana production and exports. Shipments subsided again, back to levels near average for the season (+ 4 % in November and + 0 % in December).
