A highly diversified supply

Regarding the Mediterranean, Israeli Hass volumes gradually subsided throughout the month. The last incoming shipments marking the end of the campaign were recorded in week 18. Spanish volumes made up 26 % of the total supply in April, though they started to fall.

The summer origins made their comeback. Peru gradually established itself on the market to account for as much as 51 % of the supply by w.17. On the early segment, Peruvian volumes were 10 % bigger than in 2018 because of the boom in surface areas in the Olmos region. In addition, Kenya had a much bigger presence (approximately 12 % of the overall supply). For both these origins, the fruit sizing was rather small, leading to some market pressure. South Africa also started to establish itself on the market, with volumes 7 % smaller than in 2018 (an off year). In this context the overall supply was highly diversified and heavy (+ 7 % on 2018). Hence after the somewhat mediocre Easter promotions this year, some small stocks formed at the end of the month, mainly among small sizes. Prices were again lower than in previous years (7 % below average).

The scenario was the same on the green varieties segment: Israel and Spain gave way to the summer origins (Peru, Kenya and South Africa). Prices remained satisfactory overall (6 % above average).
