Swollen market, dragging prices downward

The overall supply was around 3 million boxes per week, with the cumulative total for May 2 % greater than in 2018. These heavy volumes were the result of various factors. On the one hand, the South African Hass supply continued to progress, albeit reaching lower levels than last year (off year). On the other hand, Peru gained more and more ground, with shipments from the Olmos region (early segment). Peruvian exports to the EC market were 13 % bigger than in 2018. Kenya too registered levels distinctly above average because of the vigorous development of the production zones. Sizes for both these origins were on the small side (22 and above). Hence large volumes of small fruit were available, generating high market pressure throughout the month. Stocks built up, and prices saw a steep fall. Although the supply of sizes 16-18-20 was less abundant, the poor market cycle dragged prices downward.

The green varieties supply to the European market mainly came from Peru, South Africa and to a lesser degree Kenya. Total volumes were 27 % above average. Although they dropped throughout the month, prices remained satisfactory overall (12 % above average).
