Stability

As usual in August, demand was very quiet. The school holidays, as well as the presence of summer fruits severely curbed the sales tempo across Europe. The overall supply maintained relatively limited levels, helping maintain the balance during the summer. Ecuador saw a distinct shortfall (13 % below average), because of bigger exports to the Asian markets. Shipments from Costa Rica were also smaller than in 2018. Meanwhile African origins remained stable overall, with levels around average. Finally, French West Indies volumes dipped slightly in August, and remained in shortfall (10 % below average). The Colombian supply was alone in continuing to rise throughout the month, with above-average levels (+ 5 %). In this context stocks remained under control during the summer hiatus, helping keep prices stable and around average (+ 1 %). In week 35, in view of preparations for the new school year promotions, demand seemed to regain some vitality.
