A very difficult market

Conditions on the pineapple market in October were particularly difficult, if not catastrophic. The imbalance of the Costa Rican supply continued, with far too many sizes 9 and 10, for which even in the first half-month operators had to resort to open-price sales. Demand seemed more interested in sizes 6, 7 and 8, which were scarcer. From the start of the second half-month, sales of sizes 7 and 8 were also under tension on certain markets. Even operators tied to the supermarket sector suffered from the flatness of demand, to the extent that several times during the month the purchasing centres had to reduce their orders, sometimes by half. At the end of the month, the 1st November public holiday drove operators to implement numerous clearance sales in the hope of finally healing the market and be able to sell off incoming batches.

Activity on the air-freight market was somewhat quiet throughout the month. During the first half-month, the good availability of seasonal fruits forced operators to scale back their imports, especially of Cayenne, for which there was less purchaser interest. We should also recognise that the batches available were of rather heterogeneous quality, especially from Cameroon because of rains in the production zones. Sugarloaf sales were also less fluid, which forced importers to scale back their volumes. This reduction in the overall supply was unable to prevent operators from relaxing their prices at the end of the first half-month, to regain a degree of fluidity. At the end of the month, however, demand seemed better for coloured batches from Ghana and Togo. The livelier demand for the top-up Sweet supply from Central America, which was scarcer, helped Ghana make its comeback on this niche, aligned with the rates of the various origins (2.20-2.40 euros/kg).

Sales on the Victoria market were also slow. The increase in the Reunion supply, unbalanced by too much size 10 fruit, came in a context of lukewarm demand, especially at the end of the month because of the autumn school holidays. Nonetheless rates remained relatively stable throughout the month.
