Summer break

For the second consecutive month, the EU-28 supply in August 2020 was down, and by quite a considerable amount: - 4 %. All the origin types registered a negative growth rate, ranging from - 2 % for the dollar origins (especially Colombia) to - 12 % for the ACPs (especially Cameroon, the Dominican Republic and Ghana). European production remained in the red (- 4 %), despite the good performances by Guadeloupe and Canaries. Over the first 8 months of 2020, the market rose again by 3 % from last year, due to a very strong surge by the dollar banana (+ 5 %), while the ACP group was down in the same proportions. Finally, over 12 months (September 2019 to August 2020), surplus consumption decreased to 140 000 tonnes, i.e. an annual growth of just over 2 %, to reach 6 595 000 tonnes.
